  1. NIGHT RUNNERS - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the magazine, "Galaxy, April 1977".

I was not in the mood to draw when I was about to start on "Night Runners," so I got up and went to my cassette collection and selected one that I had filled with my favorite music. I put it in the cassette player and turned the volume down a bit so the music would be rather soft and soothing.

I sat down in my swivel chair, leaned back and looked at the blank sketching paper on my drawing table, and without meaning to I began to wonder . . . What would this drawing look like if Edd Cartier drew it?, Kelly Freas? Hannes Bok? Norman Rockwell? Richard Powers? Paul Orban? Walt Disney studios? . . .

How about N.C. Wyeth? Frank Frazetta? Robert Peak? About an hour passed as I continued to listen to the music and think about how other artists would draw the "Runners". That's not a difficult thing to do, really . . .

But I was interrupted by the thought, "Hey! None of them are going to do this drawing, You are!" - So I leaned forward, picked up the pencil and started drawing . . . a small, light circle where the Tigers head will be, a small light circle where the Girl's head should be, and a light line across the bottom where her feet will rest . . . And somewhere along the way Frank Sinatra sang "My Way", and that's how I drew this picture.
